Remember to Book a Chimney Sweep!

We’re supporting this year’s national Chimney Fire Safety Week and want to remind everyone that it’s important to book a chimney sweep before lighting your stove for the first time this winter.

Regular chimney sweeping is essential for removing soot, bird nests, cobwebs, and other blockages. It also eliminates creosote build-up, a highly flammable substance that can lead to dangerous chimney fires.

This is also a good time to check your stove is ready for use and perform any essential maintenance to ensure your stove is ready to go when you need it.

Some tips to make sure your home stays safe this winter include:

• Put out your fire: Always put out your fire before going to bed or leaving the house.
• Keep your chimney clean: Chimneys can get dirty and sticky with tar, which can catch fire easily.
• Check your chimney: Check your chimney breast for cracks or broken bricks, and make sure sparks and fumes can’t escape.
• Use dry wood: When burning wood, use dry, seasoned wood only. Look for the “Ready to Burn” logo when purchasing wood to ensure you’re getting properly dried fuel.
• Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and remember to test them regularly, replacing batteries when necessary.
• Don’t block air vents: Never interrupt the air supply by blocking air vents or air bricks.
• Inspect stove rope seals: If you notice any wear, gaps, or damage, it is time to replace the rope. Look for the “Ready to Burn” logo when purchasing wood to ensure you’re getting properly dried fuel.
